NJIT has extended the Campus Mobile Network to include wireless network connectivity. We have installed Cisco Wireless Access Points throughout the Newark Campus, these, combined with your notebook and a wireless LAN card can give you access to true Mobile Computing. NJIT Students, Faculty and Staff are  invited to try it out. NJIT has made available through the Van Houten Library a number of Cisco Aironet 350 series Wireless LAN Adapters. Present your Valid NJIT Library Card at the circulation desk in the Van Houten Library and ask for the Cisco Wireless Card. The wireless card may be checked out overnight, due back the next day. Normal library fines will be accessed for late, lost or damaged cards. Any NJIT affiliated user with a valid UCID may use the wireless network after Authenticating. If you need guidance in how to install the NJIT Cisco wireless card from the library you can contact the Computing Service Help Desk or visit Academic Computing as noted below.

Please note: The Wireless Network is an extension of the NJIT Mobile network. Your notebook with wireless connection will only have access to basic network services until you use a valid UCID and UCID password to Authenticate.

Before you begin you will need:

• A Notebook Computer with PCMCIA slot and associated slot services software and CD-ROM drive.
• A Wireless LAN card that is 802.11b Compliant. (Can be borrowed at the Van Houten Library with a valid library card).


• Installed Drivers for the Wireless LAN card (Included with the card)
• The List of Areas Covered by Wireless (Under Construction)
• A valid UCID (University Computing ID), please see Create a UCID in the Computing @ NJIT Guide
• Knowledge of how to use the NJIT Mobile Network, see below.

Where can I get my own Wireless LAN Adapter

NJIT has tested its wireless network using the Cisco AIR-PCM352 LAN adapter.  Coverage areas were designed utilizing this card.  This card transmits with 100mW of power.  Many other vendors’ cards transmit with 30mW of power.  If another vendor's 802.11b card (Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum) is used, coverage area may be reduced and encryption will not be possible.

The table on this page shows a list of venders that sell Cisco AIR-PCM352 LAN adapters.  The list is not intended to show a preference of one vender over another but only suggests some possible vender choices.

Cisco AIR-PCM352 LAN adapters can be purchased at the vendors listed.
