Residence Hall Network Quick Start Guide
(http://telecom.njit.edu/rhquick/)

The use of the Residence Hall Network requires weekly authentication in order to access Campus and Internet services. However, all Residence Hall documentation services, installation programs and configuration systems are available without authentication. Please follow the Getting Connected section to get started. Once you have a connection to the Residence Hall Network you can then switch to the online documentation pages, http://telecom.njit.edu/rh/. Should you need assistance, please call the Computing Help desk at 973-596-2900, or dial extension 2900 from any campus phone.

Getting Connected

  1. If you have not already done so, install your Network Interface Card (NIC, LAN Card) in your computer. This should be an Ethernet  card with an RJ45 Jack.
  2. During the installation you will want to install only the TCP/IP protocol, set to automatically configure. Using other protocols can cause noise on the Residence Hall network and slow down connectivity for all residents. Note: You must set the TCP/IP protocol to automatically configure. This option can also be referred to as, "Obtain IP Address Automatically", "Use DHCP to Configure this System". If the bridge connection , or other protocols such as IPX/NetBios installed, they should be removed or disabled.
  3. Obtain a twisted CAT5, CAT V or better Ethernet cable with RJ 45 Connectors. This cable will connect your PC to campus network. It is very important you use the correct cable, do not use a telephone cable or other flat serial cable. Use of an incorrect cable can damage the pins in your network port, or cause a poor connection.
  4. Locate the wall plate in your room, it is usually near your desk. The wall plate will have a single RED RJ45 jack which looks like a large phone connector. Connect your Ethernet cable the both the RED jack on your wall plate, and the port on your computer's  Network Interface Card.
  5. Boot your PC.
  6. Go to the campus web server: http://www.njit.edu/. If you do not get a connection, or you get an warning pop-up, review your connection, and verify your LAN card is installed correctly. If you continue to have problems, please call the Computing Help desk at 973-596-2900, or dial extension 2900 from any campus phone. A campus phone is available at the front desk of each Residence Hall.
  7. Start your web Browser and go to http://telecom.njit.edu/rh/ , review the Agreements, Connectivity Guide, and other services. The remaining steps link from this page. You can select the Quick Start Guide and continue from here interactively.
  8. In order to use the Residence Hall Network you will need a University Computing ID (UCID). Additional information about your UCID and how to obtain it is available in the IST Getting Started Guide.
  9. Authentication is required for use of the NJIT Network and Internet. To authenticate. open your Web Browser and go to http://auth.njit.edu/.  Additional information about authentication is available at http://telecom.njit.edu/authentication
  10. To use your E-mail see: How to Send Mail Using the Dedicated Residence Hall Mail Server.
  11. The NJIT Student Senate has voted to recommend the University restrict peer-to-peer file sharing. Computing Services has enacted procedures to support this recomendation. In May 2003, access to popular peer-to-peer sharing services from the NJIT Network to the commodity Internet were blocked and no longer function.
  12. Students choosing to run wireless 802.11 devices in the residence halls should configure their APs for Channel 1 only.  Set the SSID of the AP to building name, room number, and students UCID.  For example, John Smith with UCID JS999 in room 234 Redwood Hall should set the SSID to  redwood234js999. The APs should be configured to use NAT/PAT and should not be configured as bridges.
  13. NJIT does not permit the connection of Hubs/Switches on the computer network ports. This is due to a limitation on IP address space. Residents only may add a residential NAT/PAT gateway with RFC 1918 private address space (192.168.0.0) to support multiple connections. Hub and Switch control have been implemented in all Residence Hall Networks. Please see the following link for details: http://telecom.njit.edu/rhswitches/
  14. All lounge areas in the residence Hall  have now been  provided with high speed connectivity. Connect to the lounge wall plate as you would in your room. Use of these convenience connections will require authentication using UCID and password.
