Residence Hall - FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

I am having trouble with my computer, who do I contact for Help?

You can call the Computing Service Help Desk at 973-596-2900. They will be able to log your call and forward it to the appropriate group or individual who will be able to help you. When you log a call you will be given an incident number, please make a note of it.
When I click on "Network Neighborhood", no services appear, and sometimes I get an error message. If there something wrong?
No there is nothing wrong, at the present time there are no supported services which can appear in the "Network Neighborhood". Some students may create local services on their computers which are available only in the Residence Halls. If you are attempting to get to one of these services you must speak to the student offering the service. We do not recommend you offer local services or attach to services offered by others. If done incorrectly you could open your computer to unwanted intrusions.
My computer is connected to the Residence Hall network. I can see other Resicence Hall computers, and can get to the NJIT web page. However, I can't see any other web pages or get to any other service on or off campus. What is wrong?
In order to access services out side the Residence Hall network you must register or authenticate your workstation every 24 hours. The complete directions are locating in the document titled, Residence Hall authentication, available on the main Residence Hall Documentation Page.
I have followed the Residence Hall authentication, procedure and I am able to get to most servives, but I can't access any web pages outside NJIT.  What is Wrong?
Off campus Web access requires the use of a Web Proxy. Click here for directions on how to configure a proxy in Netscape. Click here for directions on how to configure a proxy in Internet Explorer.
What is DHCP and why is it required?
DHCP stands for Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol, it allows your computer to have all of the required network setting configured automatically. The NJIT campus network is continually changing. Using DHCP allows this change to take place with out interupting a computer's connectivity. When a change is made in the campus network DHCP will make the appropiate changes in your computer.
Why has the authentication, Residence Hall authentication, procedure been put into place?
The automated authentication procedure became a replacement for the paper based registration procedure. There are over 1200 potential connections in the Residence Hall, the manual paper based method of activating ports was no longer timely. The paper based port registration procedure was eliminated in Spring 2000.

Automated registration allows all ports in the Residence Halls to be kept activated all of the time. This eliminates the delays for connecting and moving ports in the Residence Hall network.

The decision to automate the authentication procedure was done in consultation with Residence Life and Dean of Student Services based on suggestions from students that the manual paper based method be improved.

Why do we have to register every 24 hours?

The 24 hours is a restriction in the authentication software. We are looking for ways to increase the period. The time to authenticate takes approximately 5 seconds and is good for the entire day.

Doesn't DHCP already register our workstations?

DHCP only configures your PC with an IP#. The above automated registration is not related to DHCP. We are not cycling IP#'s. You will still keep the same IP# so long as the PC continues to renew it's lease. This is standard for the majority of PC's on campus.

Is NJIT an ISP?

NJIT is not an Internet Service Provider. NJIT does not charge for access and the charge was not absorbed in the room fee. The computer network at NJIT is intended to support the academic pursuits of the university.

Why don't the Residence Halls Have Unlimited Internet Access?

Although limited recreational use is permitted by the Guidelines for Responsible Use of Computing Resources, it cannot take priority over the primary activities consistent with the mission of NJIT. Many of NJIT's users need to access their resources over the internet connection.
Residence Hall Students have been allowed Unrestricted Outgoing TCP Connections, since the Spring 1999 Semester.
What is the status of NJIT's news sever?
Telecom is not responsible for the current news server. The current news server has limited disk space and is in the process of being upgraded. Engineering Computing will be managing the news server.

Why can't I connect to my corporate site with non-standard ports?

Commercial access is not permitted in the Guidelines for Responsible Use of Computing Resources. Commercial users should contract with an Internet Service Provider (ISP).
