Installing the TCP/IP Stack for Windows 95
Once you install your Network Interface card Windows 95
should automatically recognize it upon reboot. At this point you will be
at step 3 in the instructions below. If your card is not automatically
detected, then you must manually add it. You can do this by selecting the
Add/Remove
Hardware icon in the Control Panel screen. Remember
the Network Interface sold in the PC Store is SMC EtherEZ
Model SMC
8416TA. If you are uncertain how to install the Network Interface,
please refer to the instructions which came with the card.
-
Click: Start - Settings - Control Panel
-
Click: Network Icon
-
Click the Configuration Tab, to configure the
network setting
-
Add the TCP/IP protocol to the Network Interface by Clicking
on the interface icon and description, Then Click: Add - Protocol
- Microsoft - TCP/IP
-
Remove the Netware Client. This client is not needed
for TCP/IP connectivity. You remove this by click on each client, then
Clicking the Delete button.
-
Except for the newly added TCP/IP protocol, remove all Network
Protocols such as the IPX/SPX and Netbeui protocol. These protocols are
not needed for TCP/IP and will cause unwanted network traffic and configuration
problems if left installed. You can remove these by clicking on each ,
then clicking the Delete button.
-
Next you will need to configure the TCP/IP protocol to use
DHCP. To do this, click on the TCP/IP Protocol Icon and Description, then
Click the Properties button.
-
Click the IP Address Tab.
-
Make certain every field is blank. If it is not, highlight
the text and press the Delete key to clear it out.
-
Click the Bullet: Obtain an IP Address Automatically, to
select that option.
-
Next click on each of the Tabs Such as Gateway,
and DNS Configuration. Make sure all fields are blank. If
they are not, blank them out if you are allowed.
-
Click OK.
-
You then need to configure your computer to attach to the
Academic Domain. To do this click on the Client for Microsoft Network
and then click the Properties button. Place a check mark
next to logon to Windows NT Domain. Then in the blank area
labeled Windows NT Domain type the word ACADEMIC.
-
Click Ok
-
Verify that Primary Network Logon is set to Client for
Microsoft Networks
-
Click the Identification Tab to Identify your Computer. Your
computer must be Identified to join the network.
Your Computer Name must be set to your ACADEMIC domain username
followed by -"PC" , for example, if your Academic username is ABC1234 then
your Computer Name is ABC1234-PC .
The Workgroup should be set to ACADEMIC .
The Computer Description should be set to your name.
-
Click OK
Windows 95 may now ask for some of the installation diskettes,
or CD-ROM. The next time your PC reboots it will be assigned an IP address
based upon your location in the Residence Hall.
