Attachment D:
Network Interface Connection Instructions

Overview

Your PC is connected to the University's network through the use of a Network Interface or LAN Card. The LAN card is installed in one of your PC's expansion slots. There is a connector on the back of you PC on the card. This connector is called an RJ45 jack. It looks somewhat like a phone jack, however it is NOT a phone jack and should NEVER be plugged into a telephone wall jack. Doing so can damage your computer. A special 10-baseT cable is connected from the RJ45 jack on your PC to the corresponding RED colored RJ45 port in your room.

Identifying your port

When you report a problem with your connection you will need to provided us with your residence hall name, room number and port ID. The room number and port ID are printed on the data jack in your room. For example:

Redwood - 222 A

Please do not confuse the port ID letter with your room’s suit letter. Read the port ID letter from your data Jack.

Physically Connecting the PC to the Data Port

Be sure your PC is turned off. Plug one end of the 10-BaseT cable into the RJ45 jack on the back of your PC. Plug the other end into RED RJ45 port assigned to you in your room.

It is important you plug your PC into this jack and only this jack. Remember, also, to only use the RED jack. You should never connect your PC to another port in the building or your roommate's port. Doing so will cause that other port to be deactivated. If a port is deactivated you must fill out a Port re-activation form. This form is available at the Residence Life Office. Fill the form out and leave it with Residence Life who will get the information to TeleCom.
