Installing the Network Interface
Port Activation
All ports in all rooms are activated. In order to access systems outside
the Residence Hall network you must also electronically register your workstation.
See Automatic
Workstation Registration. If you change rooms or residence halls
it no longer effects your connectivity.
Option 1- Have CMF install the card
The Computer Maintenance Facility (CMF) will install Network
Interface cards in all NJIT machines distributed to students through the
computer distribution program. The Newly Admitted Freshmen should
have the LAN card included in the Distribution computer. To facilitate
the installation of your network interface please follow this procedure.
CMF will provide a drop location for your PC set at the beginning of each
semester. Contact Residence Life for more information on the days CMF will
available. If you miss the CMF drop off day, you must schedule an individual
appointment with CMF.

Upgrade your PC’s hardware if you can.

Install Windows, (skipping any network installation
questions).

If you have installed a CMOS or BOOT password on your PC,
please disable it.

Have the attached Residence Hall Ethernet Connectivity Registration
Form filled out and tape it to the top of your CPU case. You MUST included
your LAN card Hardware or MAC address, see attached instructions on how
to obtain it. The form will be returned with your PC, you must now register
your LAN cord by returning this form to Residence Life.

Bring ONLY your CPU to the designated drop off area. DO NOT
bring cables, the mouse, monitor or keyboard. Please DO NOT bring your
CPU in the box.

If you would like CMF to install your additional memory,
or other needed hardware upgrades ONLY as they apply to the Network Connectivity,
please bring these items with you. Include any documentation, or driver
diskettes you might have received with the equipment.

If you purchased your own Network Interface, please bring
all documentation and driver diskettes.

Report to your designated area for drop off on time and pick-up
on time.
Please note: Some systems may require being
kept overnight.
Some hardware configurations may not be compatible in
a network environment.
CMF, TeleCom, and Academic Computing are not responsible
if unsupported or third party equipment is not functional.
Option 2 – Install your own LAN card

Upgrade your PC if needed.

Install Windows 95/NT Workstation or an OS which supports
DHCP, if not installed.

Install the TCP/IP stack. See Installing
the TCP/IP Stack.

Intall Your LAN card as per the manufacturer's instructions.
After your LAN Card is installed

Attach your PC to the correct Data Port in your room. See
Network
Interface Connection Instructions.

How to Obtain your LAN Card’s Hardware (MAC) Address In
Windows 95
In some cases you may be asked for your Computer's Hardware MAC Address.
This is a unique number number assigned to every LAN card by the Manufacturer.
The following instructions tell you how to get your MAC address in Windows
95.

Start your Computer in Windows 95. Note: your LAN card and all drivers
should be installed.

Start Windows IP Configuration Click: Start-RUN and Type: WINIPCFG

The IP Configuration window displays.

In the first field a Network interface description is displayed.
Click the Down arrow to open up the field and select the description
LAN card you had installed. (This should exactly match the description
selected when you installed your LAN card.)
DO NOT select PPP adapter.

The field Labeled Adapter Address: contains your LAN Card’s MAC
address. It is a 16 digit hexadecimal number with every second digit separated
by a dash.
How to Obtain your LAN Card’s Hardware (MAC) Address In
Windows NT Workstation
In some cases you may be asked for your Computer's Hardware MAC Address.
This is a unique number number assigned to every LAN card by the Manufacturer.
The following instructions tell you how to get your MAC address in Windows
NT Workstation.

Start your Computer in NT and Log In. Note: your LAN card and all drivers
should be installed.

Start Windows Command Line Click: Start-RUN and Type: CMD

At the prompt Enter: ipconfig /all

The IP Configuration will display and information area for each network
device installed Ethernet adapter NNN#####, where NNN###
is the name of the adapter you installed.

The field labeled Physical Address: in the area for your adapter
contains your LAN Card’s MAC address. It is a 16 digit hexadecimal number
with every second digit separated by a dash.
Please note: For most LAN cards the
MAC address is also printed on the card.
