Network Services Provided to Residence Hall Students

The primary purpose of this connectivity is to allow students access to Academic Computing resources and the Internet in support of their studies. The students are subject to the same rules and provisions as outlined in the University’s Access to Information and Computing Agreement, as well as, TheGuidelines for Responsible Use of Computing Resources. Students are under no obligation to accept or use this service.

  1. The following services will be provided to Residence Hall students:
  1. To be connected to the network, PCs must be at least an 80386-33 with 8 megabytes of memory. Students are responsible for all PC upgrade costs.
  2. CMF will install the network interface cards for each university issued computer.
  3. CMF will also install the core TCP/IP protocol stack needed to operate the computer. This installation will also include Microsoft’s basic Telnet and FTP programs.
  4.  Students may also install their own Network Interface cards. See: Attachment B: Obtaining a Network Interface, and , Installing the TCP/IP Stack, explaining how to install the TCP/IP stack for Microsoft Windows 95. Directions for network card installation and drivers are included with the card.
  5. The instruction sheet, Getting Your Windows Workstation Started. will explain how to get the first copies of Netscape and other Windows based Telnet and FTP programs.
  6. A student may choose to install an operating system other then Windows 95. If this is the case, the operating system must support DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol). Operating Systems which do not support DHCP cannot be connected to the Residence Hall Network. The student accepts full responsibility for installing operating systems other then Windows 95 or Windows NT Workstation.
Note: Students who have machines that cannot run Windows, such as 80286 CPU PCs and XT or AT computers, cannot run graphical web browser like Netscape, or Windows based Telnet and FTP. Furthermore, students who do not install or upgrade to Windows 95 or an operating system which supports DHCP cannot run the required Windows TCP/IP protocol stack. Most Network connectivity applications only run under windows and a windows based TCP/IP protocol stack. If a student has one of these computers, and/or does not wish to upgrade, they cannot connect to the NJIT residence hall network.
Steps to Follow to get connected to the Residence Hall Network
  1. Upgrade your PC, if necessary, so it can support the connectivity.

  2. (See: Attachment 1a: System Requirements to Connect to the Residence Hall Network)
  3. Purchase a Network Interface Kit from the PC Store, or provide your own Network Card.

  4. NOTE: 1998 Freshman receive a Network Interface Kit as part of their Distribution System.
(See: Attachment 1b: Obtaining a Network Interface)
  5. Have CMF install the Network Interface and Drivers, or install you own.

  6. (See: Attachment 1c: Installing the Network Interface)
  7. Connect your PC to the port in your room.

  8. (See: Attachment 1d: Network Interface Connection Instructions)
  9. Install the TCP/IP Stack for your OS.

  10. (See: Installing the TCP/IP Stack)
  11. Install application software such as Netscape, Telnet, and FTP.

  12. (See Getting Your Windows Workstation Started)
  13. Register your Computer and Network interface to use other services.
